White House to Host Conference in September on Food

In September 2022, date TBD, the White House will host a Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health. Richard Nixon held the first White House Conference on Food, Nutrition and Health in 1969, which was a decisive event has shaped food policy over the past 50 years. The goal of this year’s Conference is to drive change to end hunger, improve nutrition and physical activity, reduce diet-related disease; improve food access and affordability; and to launch a national plan to achieve the goal. Six regional listening sessions to gather input from stakeholders were held in June 2022. A report on the sessions will be submitted to the White House. Read more…
 

FDA to Conduct Comprehensive Evaluation of Human Foods Program

On July 19, 2022, FDA Commissioner of Food and Drugs, Robert Califf, MD, ordered an evaluation of FDA’s Human Foods Program, which will include an assessment of processes and procedures, resources, and organizational structure. FDA has engaged the Reagan-Udall Foundation, working with external experts, to conduct the assessment. A report of their findings and recommended changes will be submitted to FDA within 60 days of initiation. For more information visit the official FDA website and an article from Politico.

 

Federal Bill would Remove Food Programs from FDA

On July 13, 2022, Senator Durbin (D-IL) and Rep. DeLauro (D-CT) introduced the Food Safety Administration Act which would remove existing food programs from the FDA and establish a single food safety agency, the Food Safety Administration, under the Department of Health and Human Services. Other provisions of the Act include: The FDA will become the Federal Drug Administration; the Administrator of Food Safety must have food safety expertise; requires establishment of a food facilities inspection program; and sets the frequency of facility inspections. For more information and a copy of the bill…
 

FDA to Resume Testing of Fresh and Frozen Berries

FDA is developing a strategy to enhance the safety of fresh and frozen berries. It will identify measures to limit or prevent contamination throughout the supply chain, approaches to re-enforce control measures, and areas where research is needed. This strategy is in response to a history of hepatitis A and norovirus outbreaks linked to berry consumption. In August, FDA plans to resume collection and testing that it paused at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. FDA will collect and test about 427 more, however, it will not test strawberries as it has already met the target for these berries.
